YA Fantasy + Sci/Fi Redesigns

For these 8 pieces, I redesigned the book covers of some of my favorite young adult fantasy and science fiction novels. Literature and art are two of my passions, therefore I decided to incorporate both into this project. I depicted each of the main characters within each book, putting them on display with symbolism from the novel.

Cyborg? Human? Both

Cyborg? Human? Both

The Lunar Chronicles are a futuristic retelling of classical fairytales, where Cinder is the first book in the series. Linh Cinder is half human half cyborg has to deal with an evil stepmother and make a living during an epidemic. She starts a rebellion and revolt against an evil queen on the Lunar colony. Cinder grapples with her identity, both as a human and a cyborg.

Immortality

Immortality

Pia is the first immortal girl raised and hidden in a lab within the Amazon Rainforest all her life. She is the first to be immortal and she's being groomed to create more of her kind. This story deals with man messing with the laws of nature.

Identity

Identity

Another book that deals with man interfering within the laws of nature, experimenting on twins. Both girls are twins who have never met, living completely different lives. I tried to incorporate elements of the book, such as the setting being on a isolated tropical island surrounded by the sea.

Dauntless

Dauntless

A reimagined book cover for one of Veronica Roth's bestselling novels, Divergent. The main character, Tris Prior, lives in a futuristic world with society divided into five factions. Once people reach adulthood, they must choose a faction and commit to it for the rest of their lives. She is a strong, independent character that struggles to face and overcome her fears like a Phoenix rising from the ashes.

Unity

Unity

Five mermaids from different ocean kingdoms must put aside their differences and join forces to stop an ancient evil thought long forgotten, in order to save their aquatic homes. Their joined hands represents the unity and trust that's forged through the trials they face. Despite this bond they must form, they are not a team, yet. There's still a lot of hostility and mistrust that they have yet to overcome.

Queen of Ashes

Queen of Ashes

A redone book cover for Laura Sebastian's fantasy Young Adult novel, Ash Princess. As a prisoner for ten years within her own castle, Theo was branded, Ash Princess, a shameful title. She has survived by burying the princess she used to be, enduring the relentless abuse and ridicule of the Kaiser and his court. Despite the ashes and flames, Theo's spirit is burning to repay her oppressors, and so she'll wear her crown of ashes until the right moment.

Logic and Madness

Logic and Madness

A revamped book cover of A. G. Howard's first book Splintered. A young girl, like all of the women in her family, is cursed with an unusual ability to communicate with the insects and plants around her. The same curse that landed her mother into a mental institution, and she fears for her own sanity. A more gothic retake on Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. The image shows Alyssa fearing her powers, struggling not to lose control of them, lest she lose her sanity in the process.

Sisters of Fate

Sisters of Fate

A redesigned take on the final novel in Stephanie Garber's Caraval young adult fantasy book series. It follows the tale of two sisters fighting to save each other in a world full of magic. One sister cannot save the world and each other without the other. This piece focuses on their sisterhood, while playing on the idea of strings of fate.

Tiny Red - Retelling of
the Little Red Riding Hood

Reimaging the classical children's tale, Little Red Riding Hood, Tiny Red tells the story of an anthropomorphized bunny setting off on a journey to her grandmother's house. Using Procreate, I was able to create a charming and whimsical atmosphere.
